![]() Courtesy of The Young Eight Founded in 2002 by violinist Quinton I. Morris, the string octet’s performances engage audiences and inspire musicians and non-musicians to view classical music in a new light. As graduates of The Boston Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music, Indiana University, The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College of Music, New England Conservatory of Music and Peabody Conservatory of Music, these personable musicians have complete command over their instruments. But the group does more than just play pretty tunes. The Young Eight also hosts a two-week accelerated chamber music program designed to educate, inspire and develop young string instrumentalists. In addition, they provide seminars and workshops for schools, churches and other organizations that give real life experience advice on topics ranging from how to prepare for an audition to how to make a career as a classical musician. The attitude and passion of the individual members shines through when they perform en masse, a display of their commitment to the music and their pleasure in performance. Currently on their Black College Tour, the group will feature a new string octet by Grammy Award Winner Patrice Rushen as well as the World Premiere of Young Eight Emerging Composer Competition Winner Dr. Robert Tanner's Conch Shell Memories for String Octet. Performing a mix of traditional works and newly commissioned pieces, The Young Eight will have you singing in your seat and leave you wanting more. With many concerts throughout the month of April, your best bet is to check The Young Eight website to find out when they will be in a city near you. You can also check the MHS Calendar.
