Patricia Ann Neely (vielle, viola da gamba, violone, and Baroque double bass) holds a BA in music from Vassar College and an MFA in early music from Sarah Lawrence College.  She studied viola da gamba with Grace Feldman in New Haven, Judith Davidoff in New York, and Wieland Kuijken in Brussels and for three years was the medieval fiddle player with the acclaimed medieval ensemble, Sequentia, based in Cologne, Germany and directed by Benjamin Bagby and the late Barbara Thornton.  Ms. Neely has been a core member of The Publick Musick, “Rochester’s Baroque Orchestra” (Rochester, New York and the 2000 winners of the prestigious Noah Greenberg award), and NYS Baroque.  She was also creator and founding member of the viola da gamba consort Parthenia.

In addition to the ensembles above, Ms. Neely  has appeared with ARTEK, Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity, The Boston Camerata, the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, the Smithsonian Chamber Players and Orchestra, The New York Collegium, The Connecticut Early Music Festival, The National Cathedral of Washington Choir, Early Music New York, The American Classical Symphony, the Folger Consort, The New York Consort of Viols, Rheinischen Kantorei, Köln (Cologne, Germany), the Philadelphia Classical Symphony, and The Waverly Consort. 

She has been a member of the continuo section for the period operas presented by Glimmerglass Opera under the music direction of Jane Glover, including Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea, both at Glimmerglass and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; Cavalli's La Calisto and Monteverdi’s Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patri with Glimmerglass, Handel’s Aggripina at the New York City Opera.   

She has also appeared at many early music festivals including the Oude Muziek Festival, Utrecht, The Netherlands; Tage Alter Musik Herne, Rastaat, Karlsruhe, and Regensberg in Germany;  the Wratislavia Cantans in Poland; The Early Music Festival in Feldkirchen, Austria; the Hong Kong Music Festival; the Dublin Early Music Festival; the Boston Early Music Festival, and the Berkeley Music Festival.  She has toured with Sequentia through the auspices of the Oude Muziek Stichting series in Holland and the Goethe Institute sponsored series based in Germany and which has taken her to the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, and historic concert halls and churches throughout northern Europe. She has also has appeared as a viola da gamba soloist for both the Bach St. Matthew and St. John Passions with The Rochester Bach Society, the Gotham City Baroque Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Vassar College, and with NYS Baroque.   In 1998 she co-directed with countertenor and opera director, Drew Minter a production of Hildegard von Bingen's Ordo virtutum for the Mannes Camerata to critical acclaim by The New York Times. 

Ms. Neely has recorded for Arabesque, Allegro, Musical Heritage Society, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, Classic Masters, Erato, Lyrichord, and Music Masters and for the soundtrack to the movie Casanova.   

In addition to her performing career, Ms. Neely is a founding member and former member of the Board of Directors of Early Music America and the Viola da Gamba Society of America.   She is on the faculty of Mannes College the New School for Music Extension Division and The Brearley School.
