Special thanks to my right and left hands, Erica Talbot and Leslie Johnson, for their help with this month's newsletter.
A Letter from the Executive Director

Friends,

It occurred to me while reading the news one day last week that I didn't want to do the same thing in this month's newsletter -- tell you about events. I'm bored with event publicity! I'm more interested in idea publicity. So this month, I will discuss the most recent global news as concerns this community.

For some, this month's newsletter will read like a blog; it will be mostly informative, maybe even thought-provoking or infuriating. For others, it might serve as direction or be somewhat influential. Either way, it's a break from the norm, which I like. Do with it what you shall.

However, if you read nothing else, please take a look at the BBC article entitled, "Why Bolivian baroque rocks," which makes an interesting connection between musical legacies and race relations, colonization and cultural empowerment. Talk amongst yourselves. Better yet, engage with me: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . I love a good debate. ;) Your response just might make it back here next month...

And as always, thanks so much for supporting music, musicians, scholarship and this incredible community.

Yours,
Rashida N. Black

Careers ... a perspective and a choice

If we're friends on Facebook (meaning, you don't mind the collision of your private and public personae) then you undoubtedly saw this post by All About Jazz contributor Bill Anschell, Careers in Jazz, which features a 1920s-ish picture of men standing on a soup line. You get where he's going already, right?

The post fostered a lot of talk and reposts from jazz and classical/concert music professionals on the site. The consensus was that, yes, it is as difficult for newbies to break into the music business as it is for the more established to maintain their momentum. And yes, all musicians go through various phases of cutting their teeth to achieve varying levels of success. However, what resonated with the masses was the reality that our struggles as musicians are no different than any other profession. We aren't all doing the most interesting things all the time, but it's important to realize that there are only valleys because peaks are ahead. Point to take home: you gotta keep walking to find out.

Beethoven's Ninth Symphony

From Appalachia to Zambia, musicians across the world are raising their voices and instruments in a universal ode to Beethoven. An LA Times piece entitled Critic's Notebook: Billy Bragg does Beethoven cites various global performances of the composer's widely-recognized work.

Additionally, Kerry Candaele has begun documenting the phenomenon in Following the Ninth. "Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827), took the trials and tragedies of his life and turn them into the most enduring and powerful art the world has ever known, no more so than in his final symphony, the great Ninth. With the Ninth Symphony Beethoven had set out to change the nature of music, and he succeeded. Beethoven made a grand statement, a plea for universal brotherhood and connection across all borders and boundaries, a message both utopian and necessary in his day and ours. We have been living with the repercussions of his genius ever since."

Baroque, Back Mountain
It never fails that someone's jaw hits the ground when I tell him or her that I'm a classically trained harpist. I wonder how people would react if they knew that in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, musicians are performing Baroque music! One of the very last Jesuit missions in South America took place in the town of San Ignacio de Moxos. There, the Jesuits taught the indigenous peoples Western art music and how to make instruments, such as the cello, harp and violin. "After the Spanish expelled the Jesuits in 1767, the indigenous population preserved the music and re-wrote the scores with lyrics in their own language," writes Andres Schipani about the town in Bolivia, Why Bolivian baroque rocks. (Also, check out his article on Afro-Bolivians)

I couldn't help comparing their South American culture to our North American. What I deduced was a matter of education. The peoples of Moxos are taught that this music belongs to them, that it is part of their cultural heritage. Director of the San Ignacio School of Music states, "This [musical] project is not about trying to colonise the indigenous people... that is a thing of the past. Also, it is not about baroque... it is about giving importance to the local music, so the local people can identify with this music." Imagine what would happen if Black classical music, native traditional music mixed with our learned European musical knowledge, wasn't still predicated on existing and often newly-conceived European standards. Do you think it would be better received? Have wider audience appeal? Unite our community??

Can anything be called "symphony" these days?

According to composer dvrg, there's nothing inherently "symphonic" about Jazz Mafia's Hip Hop Symphony as opposed to, say, Darin Atwater's similarly-titled symphonic work. "It's fantastic. Though it's not what it says it is. It's soul and R&B and jazz. Some strings. Not utilized the way they should be. The DJ element is nice. And all the voices are great. Still too much cheese." (texted message) But they still turn a profit from the name, the popularity of the genre. Cash rules everything around me...

The Stars At Night...

Rising Stars

12-year-old classical pianist Lewis Warren Jr. (right), who was featured last season on America's Got Talent, began composing at 5. Just don't confuse the pint-sized prodigy with the similarly-named new Global Large Corporate Treasury Executive for Bank of America. This Texas star is shooting skyward.

We've illuminated the career of pianist Jade Simmons in the MHS eNewsletter before. This Houston Chronicle article gets us up close and personal. I'm super excited to see her perform at the University of Chicago in December!

Chicago-native, violinist Tai Murray, is becoming a household name. Recently in London, she took part in the BBC's gold-standard New Generation Artists program performing in a series of concerts last weekend as part of the BBC Proms at London's Cadogan Hall. Check out these articles:

International Developments

Burgeoning Brunei

"Hopefully, the establishment of the society will encourage them to become full time composers and help them pursue their interests as a career instead of a hobby." -- It's Music to Composers' Ears

Composers in Bandar Seri Begawan want to be afforded the opportunity to consider music as a career option. The capital and largest city of the Sultanate of Brunei, a country located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia, Brunei does not currently have its own "ASCAP," or professional society to manage and protect local composers and song writers for their benefit and for the benefit of the local music industry, a fact which hinders many would-be professional musicians from pursuing the craft.

"There is not much encouragement for young talents to become full time songwriters. This is because a local composer or lyricist won't get a single cent from royalties." A coalition of interested parties met to discuss the future of the country as a "creative society," which they hope will encourage and foster the careers of musicians.

One question: Will it work?

Myrtle Hart Society

Too Hype: Gustavo Dudamel
Gustavo Dudamel, classical music's golden ticket

"2009 is the year that we set it all right," exclaims a friend, who asked to remain nameless. "First Barack gets hired to fix the world, you get hired to fix the University and Dudamel gets hired to fix classical music. That's a lot of pressure on the Blacks and Browns! We're always cleaning something up, aren't we?" The tongue-in-cheek remarks ring with a bit of truth ... especially as concerns Dudamel.

Google his name and you'll get articles and editorials positing him as the "Chosen One," who will revive the dying world of classical music. Most recent articles include drama regarding uneven ticket sales leading up to his debut performance on October 8.

Even articles that aren't specifically written about Dudamel cite him; his name invades news supposedly written about others, including the recently appointed New York Philharmonic music director, Alan Gilbert, who can't have his pre-debut spotlight all to himself. Try to gain a better understanding about the reason John Adams is writing jazz symphonies (!!) and who's in the opening paragraph? You guessed it.

I'm definitely rooting for this young blood for a few reasons, but mostly because I've seen how the media hoists people up on hiiiiiigh pedestals ... and then knock them off. With the media as saturated as it is with "Dudamania," I sure hope he takes a lesson from the Williams sisters...

Reaching Out a Reluctant Hand…

The Charlotte Symphony had a rally. I know. It kind of caught me off-guard the first time I read it, but really. The Charlotte Symphony's "Stand Up for Your Symphony" rally took place at noon on Thursday, August 27. Amongst the many performers was former Governor Jim Martin, a one-time tuba player in the orchestra.

Why is an orchestra having a rally, you ask? Well, like most other arts organizations, the CSO is having financial difficulties.

The Charlotte Symphony kicked off it's 78th season Thursday with a rally on Independence Square. However, it faces an uncertain future With a projected fiscal deficit of nearly $2 million for 2010.

The symphony must now reach out to the community to help cover that gap.

"It is an uphill battle," said Jonathan Martin, the symphony's executive director. "We've got a long way to go. We've got a short time to get there."

The "Stand Up" campaign is really the Charlotte Symphony's last straw to try and make budget for 2010. Everyone from the executives to the musicians themselves have taken pay cuts.

"Yeah, it's a tough spot but today's event is more to show the public that their support is not in vain," said trombonist Tom Burge. "We're not going anywhere. We plan to stick around."

Similarly ...
In an effort to drum up public support (no pub intended), many organizations have decided to take it to the streets. Literally. In Sioux Falls, South Dakota Symphony decided to have local artists paint nine pianos, which were then dispersed throughout the city to promote the upcoming season. Clever.

Still, while reading, I wished our country was more like Singapore, where the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) awarded a youth-led orchestra with the HSBC Youth Excellence Award for Leadership and Community Service, which aimed to develop talented young Singaporeans to enrich the community -- a move preferred over, say, cutting guest artists from the programming.

Articles like these make me wonder why arts orgs don't engage audiences to this degree during their good financial times. I hate to say it, but the "culture" of classical music seems completely reversed when these larger arts orgs are in need. What I mean by that is, most of our music institutions don't want the common people in their seats, do they? Otherwise, they'd market more toward the masses doing things that they are now doing--making the arts accessible, visible, public. Some organizations with whom I've spoke claim to want "diversity," but I think that's just the popular thing to do. Like "going green." Yet, these same orgs concede that their marketing efforts to Black and Latino communities were unfruitful. (Closer examination of what type of marketing they do clearly reveals the reason. Is THIS really helpful??) Therefore, they conclude, those communities are disinterested and a waste of money/effort.

Then why solicit us now? Where were all of these public services, ½ priced tickets, etc, before the global economic crisis? As a sweeping generalization, most "high brow" corporate entities want the elite money, the subscription money, the sponsor/investor money. They aren't going after the students and the Drake-listeners. But now who is going to bail them out? Yep, the "Blacks and Browns" as my friend put it earlier. It's not surprising. Methinks our institutions should consider the spending power of our communities before the scent of desperation permeates the air.

The Soloist: still solo

Why mainstream media is maybe not a good medium for social justice

Remember back in May when I was all excited about The Soloist? I kept asking folks who saw the movie if they thought it would make a difference, socially. The consensus: no. The reason: people see this poverty and hardship as entertainment, not social justice. Needless to say, my spirit was crushed. Then the focal point in the story, cellist Nathaniel Ayers, showed up in last week's news.

How can I be happy that Mr. Ayers is playing the cello online, but still living on Skid Row?

What do I care if he hugs Yo Yo Ma? The movie made Corporate Suits millions, but is considered a box office flop. What impact does that have on our musical community? (Did I mention, he's still living on the streets??)

America was aghast that the Slumdog Millionaire stars were sent back to their slums, but The Soloist coverage hardly makes waves. C'mon, Hollywood! This type of exploitation is sooo 1970s.

Myrtle Hart Society

Technology: helpful or hindrance?

In some ways, I'm glad that we're in this time of economic woe because it's making people a lot more aggressive, creative and innovative in the arts and with art-making. But I also wonder...

Does access detract from the experience of attending a live performance ... in HD?

Is serialism for the next generation really what we need?

What does it mean to you that Anyone Can Compose?
